I have been working on the dresser from hell for the last two weeks. {sorry for the cussing, but I am serious when I say that, it has been quite the DIY project that I don’t care to repeat}
I bought this chest of drawers at the thrift shop for $35. I liked the bones of it, and since my daughter and son-n-law are buying their first house and don’t have any dressers I thought I would help them out and refinish this chest of drawers. I fell in love with this Urban Outfitters dresser. This was going to be my inspiration piece.
I wanted to change it up a bit and use a high gloss white finish rather than the wood tone and then stencil the design on. I got to work and did all the proper steps, sanded it, used TSP {i think that is what it is called} primed it, and then sprayed it. I was so proud that I was taking the time to really do it right. And this is what I got for all my hard work
See it? I could not for the life of me get the gloss paint to go on smoothly! I actually sanded and primed this puppy three different times trying to get the paint to stick smoothly and the dang thing kept doing this.
It is real wood under that paint, nice wood actually, I should of just gone with the wood tone to begin with. Plus it was 98 degrees outside, I was exhausting myself for a darn $35 dresser. But I wasn’t giving up. It was too darn hot and heavy to move it by myself so I left it on the side of the driveway, kinda out of the way. And then.. my daughter backed into it. Yep, I should of probably moved it. But the sad thing is, she didn’t do that bad of damage. I could of gotten off the hook, but NO! My husband just glued it back together and it was good to go.
I was not going to give up on my project. When I start something I finish it. This stupid $35 dresser was not going to get the best of me {although, I did think about donating it back to the thrift shop through out this whole process many times} I was temporarily thinking I might want to mirror the whole thing, then I remembered I don’t know how to do that. Reading through my Google reader I noticed CSI Project was having a Mod Podge link up, I love Amy at Mod Podge rocks! She is the one who inspired me to start a blog. And that is when the light bulb went off! When all else fails, Mod Podge. I had some left over wallpaper, that is kinda shinny like a mirror and is kinda modern looking that would go with gloss white, so what the heck? What did I have to loose right? {My sanity maybe?}
I was able to leave the drawers high gloss white. For whatever reason the paint went on pretty smoothly on those. {although there are some chunks of wood in areas that are slightly missing from the car incident} Then I went to Home Depot and got some swanky knobs for $1.99 each.
Thought I was SO COOL putting these knobs on myself. You know, measuring and drilling, the kinda stuff I usually have my husband do. Then this happened
Scuffed up the dang drawer front! Fixed that with some spray. Took a step back to look at my new handy work and crap! Are you serious??? The dang knob is on crooked. UGH.
See it? The third knob down. I finally had to call in the big guns and have my husband fix the crooked knobs. But I am done. Done, done done. I put it in my garage to store for the kids big moving day. It isn’t perfect, has some flaws, but I think overall it is kinda cute.
