I thought when I bought this bench at an estate sale for $30 it would be an easy makeover.
Wrong. It turned out to be a nightmare which made me want to throw it down a cliff.
My first mistake was to spray it with an enamel paint using my new paint sprayer on a really hot day. That decision turned into a hot drip mess. But I wasn’t going to give up. I decided to start over, and sanded off all the enamel paint, getting into those recessed sides and fronts was a MAJOR pain. The wood is some weird red soft wood, and because of this I ended up sanding off some of the decorative detail, oops. I was so set on using this bench, it was the perfect size and style I was looking for, and I was on a mission to finished it.
If you get close up you can see the imperfections, {but we won’t get that close I have too much pride lol}
Once I put it in the room, it wasn’t looking so bad {except for the right cabinet door won’t line up}
I wanted a bench that had storage that I could put beach towels inside. A one stop area where you could grab your towel for going out to the river, and then hang it on the oars to dry when you are done
I will be putting a cushion on the top in the blue Charlotte Moss fabric, which I am in love with
It’s the same fabric I am using on the dining room chair cushions
and the entryway built in bench
I love how the Charlotte Moss fabric looks with the pillow fabric and the valances
Overall, I think the bench looks better than what I started with
Once I get the cushion on I am hoping it will distract from the imperfections of my failed attempted to paint it. Well, at least that is what I keep telling myself.

I think it’s plenty “good enough” (coming over from facebook). I did not even notice that right door until you pointed it out. Honestly, I think it looks great. Love the fabric that you’ve chosen. I just love seeing all this old furniture refinished and fabulous once again.
I love that!! its beautiful.
I think it is perfect for what you wanted it for. I’m sorry that you had so much trouble with it. I have a love/hate relationship with paint sprayers. Especially after priming the rest of our house last night!
You’re so silly! :) I think the bench looks great, and it’s going to be fabulous when you get the cushion on it. It’s going to be great storage.
Love the look of the entryway built in with the fabric, pillow and valance!

ps if I had to put my finger on a reason for the failed spray paint, I would guess you were too heavy with the paint. several very light coats works best. I’ll have to try something glossy someday soon. (then I might have to eat those words)
I think it looks wonderful but I understand where your coming from. We want everything to come out “perfect” : ) The fabric is beautiful!
I think it looks amazing!! I am a perfectionist too so I know how you feel…but this turned out really great. I would have never imagined it looked like the before.
I just found your site and I LOVE it! I saw a comment where you indicated that you had a whole section ‘Pinned” regarding pallet items. I have tried and tried to get to your pinterest site, but I keep getting an error message. Would you email your pinterest address to me? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Gail gailheinecke@charter.net
I think it looks pretty good! LOVE that fabric. Sprinkled in all the right places. Can’t wait to see it on the bench. It’s all coming together so well!
